Kiriako Vergos Managing Director, Codium Networks In the mid-nineties, following a career with blue chip multinationals such as the BBC and Delloit’s, Mr. Vergos led the development of Gammatel, one of the first alternative Telco’s to come out of the wave of deregulation ‘fever’ that spread across the globe at the time. In 1997 he founded Munditelecom; with initial capital of less than $2m., in a little more than  two years Munditelecom became one of the leading fixed-line operators in Spain, pioneering a number of new fields, ultimately developing the country’s first “thoroughbred” nationwide IP-network stretching across 1500 Km of a proprietary fibre-optic network. In 1999 Mr. Vergos accepted an offer from UPC for the acquisition of Munditelecom. Following a management buy-out that took place 2 years later, Munditelecom, now called Extra Telecom, has been recently acquired by the UK’s Car Phone Warehouse. In 1998-99  Mr. Vergos also developed ‘Milenio’; Southern Europe’s very first Broadband Wireless Local Loop consortium. In achieving this Mr. Vergos assembled a consortium of major business groups including Banque Paribas and Winstar Communications (the number one WLL operator in the world valued at more than US$ 5 billion at the time); while raising over US$ 150 million in the process. Mr. Vergos is the founder, principal shareholder and MD of Codium Networks, the No1. independent system integrator in the WiMAX field in Southern Europe.  Codium is the indirect channel partner, for the region, of Navini Networks and InfiNet Wireless. Success stories to date are: • The very first publicly funded “WiMAX”-driven network roll-out in the region. • Supply of a Next-Gen. BWA solution to the America’s Cup. (Valencia 2007) • Several other “WiMAX” deployments across Southern Europe.
